Perhaps Stevie’s finest song, just off the intro alone. Higher Ground: Released just months before Stevie was in a near-fatal car accident that left him in a coma, this funky track has been reintroduced to a new generation of fans through countless covers and odd placement in commercials. I Just Called To Say I Love You: A gem from 1980’s Stevie, that many of us remember him singing on The Cosby Show with Clair Huxtable, in an iconic performance. Love’s In Need Of Love Today: An incredible song to open a classic album, this song is good in the church, in the car, and (PERHAPS) even in the club. Knocks Me Off My Feet: “There’s somethin’ about your love…that makes me weak and knocks me off my feet.” Donell Jones’ cover of this song is good, but you gotta pay respect to Stevie, first. These Three Words: “When was the last time that they heard you say, Mother or Father–I love you.” Preach, Stevie. For a long time, I thought every black person knew the meaning behind the song. Well appease people and sing the traditional version all the way through, then immediately bust out in the more enthusiastic rendition Stevie released in 1980. That Girl: “She says her love has been crying out, but her lover hasn’t heard…what she doesn’t realize is that I’ve listened to every word.” OG Status, right there.Īs: “Just as kindness knows no shame, know through all your joy and pain that I’ll be loving you always.” This song has some of the greatest lyrics of all time. Happy Birthday The Stevie Wonder version of 'Happy Birthday' is very popular in the Black community. Ribbon In the Sky: “From now on, it will be you and I…” There are still people playing this song at their weddings…and pretty much every other major event. Sir Duke: “They can feel it all ovaaaa”…we feel the beat, the big band sound, pretty much everything. Though it’s hard to pick just ten of our favorite songs by Stevie, here are ten to get you in a celebratory mood. From the time many of us first heard his voice from the record players of our parents, Stevie has been a staple in many young (and old) black lives. 65 never sounded soooo good! Today we celebrate the birth Stevie Wonder, a true treasure. With Happy Birthday, Stevie Wonder successfully campaigned to honour Martin Luther King Jr with a national holiday, in a career of socially conscious songwriting, writes Diane Bernard.
